Painting to the max: Younis Al Azzawy is able to paint everything: the near, the far, and everything in between. S-Bahn stations, people standing around in local bars or forests, or new Van Gogh self-portraits. Nothing seems fixed or painted over; the motifs are in a constant state of dissolution, as if the painter, reluctant to continue elaborating, had recommended his paintings to simply continue painting themselves. It is this skillful painterly restraint that places Al Azzawy’s intense images in a shimmering state of suspension, allowing the various, consistently applied layers of paint to collide and take effect. The viewer finds themselves in the midst of a painterly process before a brilliant pictorial construction site, allowed to participate temporarily and mentally add everything that is absent.
The Sweden-based painter Kareem Sadoon is working on a differently complex resolution of image, paint application, and motif. In his mixed-media works, sculptural-looking figures, archaic-looking heads, and car-like pictograms encounter remnants of ornamentation, lines, and remnants of numbers and writing. Everything is interwoven through constant overpainting and obscuring. Kareem Sadoon’s pictures are reminiscent of an inadequately cleaned blackboard, on which the notes of the previous lessons shine through with each new application of chalk. This powerful all-over of information, combined with a simultaneous reduction to the essentials of the drawn line, makes the pages appear like archaic cartoons or a hard-to-decipher instruction manual for the entire world.
We look forward to this encounter of the simultaneous and the non-simultaneous, the not-yet and the no-longer, the Orient and the Occident, and everything else imaginable. A special thank you goes to our esteemed neighbor Younis Al Azzawy, who, in the 18 years of Kulturpalast Wedding International’s history, has never once complained about noise or nighttime disturbances. As the saying goes: “In Arabia, people are happy when their neighbors are celebrating a party. Then you know they’re healthy and still alive.”
That’s why things will be especially loud. Looking forward to it:

28.02.25 bis 08.03.25Friends of Kulturpalast,
At the end of February, we will say goodbye to the therapeutic blanket of snow that had settled over our rubbish-strewn Soldiner Kiez for a moment like a contemplative, cushioning down coat. Curtain up for a thematically similar double exhibition of a Finnish-Russian artist duo, because who would know better:

The Russian painter, sculptor and object- artist Anton Laiko, most recently represented in the nearby Toolbox Gallery with a collection of bottles labeled “Tears of Anton Laiko”, approaches with subversive poetry the question of how art comes into the world in today’s everyday life, which is characterized by a noisy, constant discourse:
“I am tired of social, political and anarchic art. Art must be concerned with form and content – be decorative. Like the art of the past and the future. We must free our own consciousness from social, political thinking and thinking about art and reach another level of consciousness by looking at pure reality. Silence is necessary for a person in the information noise of newspapers, mass media and everyday stress, so we, Anton Laiko and Roberto Aarnio, produce silence.”
These nuanced dimensions of silence are also the focus of Roberto Aarnio’s latest artistic exploration. The Finnish painter uses his own, extremely colorful dot and wobbly line technique to outline the mostly gray everyday life of Finnish people living alone. People look into refrigerators, sit alone at kitchen tables or in wheelchairs. In the process, motifs and form constantly dissolve – something vibrates – but nothing happens. In this contemplative form of everyday observation, despite the unconditional presence of the images, the unpainted, the absent or the silence comes to the fore:
„Silence is a choice, a deliberate act of restraint that can speak louder than words. It shields us from conflict, it creates distance, it can be the space where thoughts gather, where emotions settle, where clarity emerges.“
